My Favorite Singles of 2011

This has been a great year for electronic music. With the exception of Adele's "Someone Like You," the best singles of 2011 show how flexible and varied electronic music can be, particularly dance and house music. (And to be fair, Adele's song was remixed into a charting dance single.) Whether that be the chilly solitude of James Blake's "The Wilhelm Scream" or Britney Spears' hedonistic trance on "Till the World Ends," dance music has reinvigorated the pop scene in an exciting way, incorporating elements of house, dubstep, shoegaze, and electronica into hooky, chorus-driven tunes. My top spot this year goes to M83's "Midnight City," which brims with roll-down-the-windows optimism and nostalgia. Who says a good beat can't make you make fall in love and break your heart?
