Optimistic Pop: Carole King's Love Makes the World
To celebrate the release of Carole King's memoir, A Natural Woman, it seems crucial to revisit the singer's long career of impeccably crafted pop music. King has a knack for writing songs with the kind of laid-back, singer-songwriter cool we rarely see in our dance-pop age. Her music does not court irony, but rather encourages friendly and earnest confession. She writes music that lifts her listener up, and though this optimism may not be trendy, it is always welcome. Here is my favorite song from her catalog. (In fact, she just revealed that "Love Makes the World" is one of her favorite tracks to perform too.) Enjoy.
