Single Review: Guardian by Alanis Morissette

Alanis Morissette has never quite been the angry woman critics pegged her for in the 90s. Though anger was a theme at the peak of her career, she has more consistently explored optimistic spirituality in her music (as in "Thank U" and "Precious Illusions").  She continues her spiritual inquiries with her new single, "Guardian." Most striking about the song is its bright chorus; the singer sounds strong and confident, and the guitar-driven setting compliments her vocal. The single also marks an evolution for Morissette. While her positivity has often been tempered by loss or uncertainty, this track boasts unbridled compassion, as the singer proclaims that she will be a caretaker and protector for her loved one. Morissette has not been much of a singles artist for years, but in the age of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe," such joy could bring Morissette back into the spotlight, especially because she sounds so good in this happy state.
