Tasty Tracks of 2012: Guardian by Alanis Morissette
I am quite a fan of Alanis Morissette's latest album, Havoc and Bright Lights, and I also feel very warmly about it's first single, "Guardian." I stand by my original review of the track, to which it's notable to add that the song is a testament to Morissette's skill as a crafter of confessional pop. It follows in a growing catalog of strong opening album tracks that includes "Citizen of the Planet," "Eight Easy Steps" and "21 Things I Want in a Lover." These songs have a similar formula: guitar-heavy production, a big vocal from Morissette, and lyrics focused on strength and perseverance. None of these songs made much of a mark on radio, but, being the strongest track in this lineage, "Guardian" shows that Morissette's skills continue to sharpen. A decade or two from now, we may see her as one of the greatest songwriters of her generation.
