Good covers are tricky business, especially of beloved pop classics. However, Alex Clare gives a strong turn with his interpretation of Prince's "When Doves Cry." His voice fluctuates from aching to demanding, and his ability to deliver a solid performance holds the track together. Yet the best part of his version is the production choices, like the wind swept echoing piano that opens the song and the way he uses the lyric, "This is what it sounds like when doves cry" to setup the first dubstep breakdown that has been building under the vocal. This version is very much of its time, but then again so are the best covers, taking the past and dressing it up in today's threads. Clare's taste is right on.
