"You Gotta Be" by Des'ree is one of the first songs that came to mind when I decided to write about feel good music this year. Essentially a string of platitudes, the track doesn't seem like much on paper. Nor is its keyboard meets percussion backing terribly novel or complex. The song is an optimistic pop gem purely because of Des'ree's remarkable performance. Perhaps one of the most under-appreciated R and B vocalists of the 90s, the singer delivers her lyrics with warm, strength, and empathy. Because of her earnest approach, what could be condescending sounds endearing and compassionate. Not to mention, the repetition of the phrase, "you gotta be," is pretty damn catchy.
