The new Pitbull and Kesha collaboration, "Timber," is an unexpectedly likable song. While Pitbull delivers his typical rap with its air of misogyny, the track works because Kesha sounds so empowered standing up to his swagger; she owns her sexuality and she is no one's paramour. Of course, her hook makes the song gel and anchors one of the more playful choruses to arrive this year when coupled with the "Cotton-Eyed Joe"-style backing track. Kesha knows how to make solid, pleasurable pop (her excellent sophomore album Warrior made that clear) and she has maintained a good ear for fun party music. It is pleasing to hear her working another ear-worm hit; this will be soundtrack to the winter's New Years parties for sure.
