Tasty Track of 2013: Heart Attack by Demi Lovato

The first great single in 2013 was Demi Lovato's "Heart Attack," a busy, melodramatic, and sturdy dance-pop track that took hold of radio and, through some great remixes, the dance floor. The song throws a lot at the listener: guitar, strings, and deliciously expansive drums, but what keeps it together is Lovato's vocal. The singer has a big voice, and (perhaps because she is prone to over-singing) her delivery has a weathered sound that allows it to push through the heavy production choices to create a song that feels human and emotive, despite all of its electronic accouterments. That tension between the organic and the manufactured makes not only for an interesting soundscape but also for one of the finest pop music moments this year.
