Ariana Grande has a delightfully retro aesthetic--a blend of twentieth century girl groups and divas. Her sound makes constant nods to Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston in particular, and her ability to carry off such an homage makes her debut, Yours Truly, a genuine pleasure. The centerpiece for that record is the catchy, sexy "The Way." The song has a clean, simple production straight out of 1992, which is a refreshing change of pace for a year when so much pop music was aggressively electronic. She and rapper Mac Miller also have a palpable chemistry throughout the track, making the song not only one of the most melodically appealing but also the most romantic in 2013.
