Madonna continues to release bits and pieces of her forthcoming album, Rebel Heart, and after her solid turn performing at the Grammy Awards, she dropped three more tracks. With a total of nine new tunes legally available (not quite half of the sprawling deluxe edition), it's clear that Rebel is going to be a varied affair, moving between harder dance tunes and mid-tempo dance-inflected ballads. "Joan of Arc" falls in the latter camp and is the best of the newest songs (though I also appreciate the straight-up club sounds on "Hold Tight"). Like stronger Madonna ballads, "Joan of Arc" shows a softer diva who has grappled with the pressures of public expectation. However, more importantly, the song has an intimacy because it is pitched as a communication between the singer and a lover; rather than being about pop stardom, it is about someone reaching out to a partner when the world seems too harsh. It is the kind of accessible and sweet tune any fan could appreciate.
