Single Review: Biscuits by Kacey Musgraves

With her 2013 major label debut, Same Trailer, Different Park, Kacey Musgraves made a big splash, winning two Grammy awards and scoring gigs with Katy Perry and Willie Nelson. That album was a success because it avoids country music's current blandness and focuses on folk melodies, melodic hooks, and witty lyrics. Musgraves continues in that vein with "Biscuits," a delightful novelty track and first single from her forthcoming Pageant Material. Like her 2014 ode to individuality, "Follow Your Arrow," this latest song piles up and manipulates cliches to create a catchy song that tells people to "mind your own biscuits and life will be gravy." "Biscuits" is kitsch, smart, and sweet; it's Kacey Musgraves at her best.
