Ellie Goulding has had a surprising run of hit singles in the US, including "Lights," "Burn," "I Need Your Love," and "Love Me Like You Do." (Not to mention, great tunes like "Figure 8" that never quite caught on.) This success can attributed to her smoky, expressive voice and its dexterity in a variety of dance-pop settings. Because Goulding's music is always aimed at the club, such flexibility is necessary. Take her newest single: "On My Mind" has a more staccato chorus that we are used to from the singer (though the tune still has the swooning romanticism typical of her music), but her delivery seals the deal while also breathing life into the busy production. Many of Goulding's songs can feel cluttered, and "On My Mind" has those moments too. Regardless, the tune works.
